As the days grew shorter, it’s clear to me on my morning walks that summer will soon be over. As I look on, I can see the trees are changing, giving up their summer greens for the coming autumn shades. For me, while I have basked in the sunny and hot days, my final editing continues to move forward. I’ve missed some deadlines while being busy tutoring some of my students twice a week as they prepare for a new school year.
I would purchase a succulent to heal post-doctor and treatment appointments. Once I had five of these plants and they were thriving, I started researching how to build succulent and cactus gardens. Having learned what I was doing, my friend and I spent hours in the greenhouse, where the scent of earth and life filled our noses as we selected plants. After shopping, we packed the car and headed home. I created a video of my initial garden and shared pictures with family and friends. Three weeks later, my garden seems to be doing alright. This is a hopeful sign, as my doctors had to halt my treatments again because of their impact on my health. So, seeing my garden every morning is a source of encouragement.
The Jonathan Safran Foer quote for August speaks to me. I hope you share my sentiments and that you have a wonderful month ahead.
